FreshAWL® Z-FOG™ will ZERO out problems with Fats, Oils and Grease (FOGs). Z-FOG is the true answer for Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) to achieve a reduction of FOG associated issues in:
- Lift stations
- Transfer Lines
- Wet Wells
- Headworks
WWTP systems treated with Z-FOG will be odor free because the FreshAWL molecular chemistry eliminates hydrogen sulfide (H2S)odors coming from the FOGs and wastewaters. Be assured that Z-FOG:
- Is enzyme free
- Has no surfactants
- Has no emulsifiers
- Has no solvents
Z-FOG disrupts the hydrophobic and colloidal bonding of grease logs and cakes while further preventing colloidal adhesions of the FOG molecules sticking to each other or to walls, chains, pipes and equipment. Systems treated with Z-FOG will not be subject to grease logs, cakes and plugs forming in piping systems, interceptors, collection lines and lift stations.
A Nevada WWTP collections system had an 18 inch diameter pipe transporting wastewater from restaurants to a lift station. The Lift station was off-gassing H2S at between 10 and 20 ppm. 35,000 gallons per day were supposed to flow through this pipe, but FOGs restricted the flow which had to be redirected to an alternate line. The WWTP shut down the line and allowed FreshAWL to treat the clogged run. 5 Gallons of Z-FOG were poured into the 4,000 gallons of water filling this line. The line was shut down for 18 hours before flushing. Once the system flow was redirected back through the line the fat logs and clogs blocking the line were washed right out.
The line was then free to be used again and the odors that had been coming from the pipe were eliminated.

The once necessary and costly hydro-flushing and snaking were also eliminated!
The above example is one of many that speak to reduced costs of labor and equipment required to keep collection services running. Z-FOG eliminates the labor cost of digging FOGs out of lift stations. A small weekly addition of Z-FOG also saves on system corrosion and odor complaints coming up from neighborhood manholes.
WWTP operators will be pleased to know that FreshAWL Z-FOG:
- Is not classified as an emulsifier or surfactant (as tested by EPA)
- Is a tested corrosion inhibitor
- Has low toxicity and no regulated impurities
How Does Z-FOG Work?
Z-FOG behaves as a Eutectic Cloud Point Reducer (A Eutectic mixture is a blend of materials that melts below the melting point of any of the individual compounds). Fats, Oils, and Greases have different melting points and temperature points at which they cloud and then gel before solidifying to the texture of peanut butter. Z-FOG depresses the cloud point of the FOGs, thereby acting as a melting point reducer helping them to be more fluid-like and easier to pump or process.
The chemistry can be likened to rubber manufacturing or the setting of a permanent wave in a hair salon. Both actions require sulfur cross-linking to encourage the gooey or stringy compounds in processing to harden in the shape required. Z-FOG reacts with the sulfur molecules and breaks the cross-linking bonds that allow the FOGs to harden, thereby reducing the melting point, and removing the sulfurous odors.
Z-FOG is also helpful for the bacteria that break down FOGs in grease interceptors, grease traps, or other wastes because it frees them from the sulfur bonds allowing them to conduct their natural beneficial activities. |
